Studer VarioTrack and VarioString MPPT for commercial off-grid PV
VarioTrack and VarioString separate solar charging from the inverter. This can benefit off-grid and hybrid projects where PV must charge the battery with the AC section offline and each energy layer needs to remain serviceable.

Decision snapshot
This is not a retail bundle or a blanket compatibility claim. Components are candidates; only the project specification is binding.

What the technology or architecture actually solves
VarioTrack includes VT40, VT65 and VT80; current VT65/80 versions use an input class up to 175 V DC. VarioString VS70 and VS120 address higher string voltages and larger arrays. Selection starts with cold-temperature module Voc, string short-circuit current, pole configuration and allowable battery charge current—not the panel count in a package.
The 2026 partner list includes VT40, VT65, VT80, VS70 and VS120 as active families. Public documentation describes the shared communication bus with Xtender, BSP, RCC and Xcom. A well-designed DC-coupled path can reduce conversion stages while still requiring a compatible battery and protection.
Practical business scenarios
off-grid sites with a long daily charging window
hybrid systems where DC solar has priority over AC-coupled generation
different orientations or arrays with different string conditions
PV expansion without replacing the battery inverter
Control and automation
The charger must follow battery current, temperature and other source states. With BSP and supervisory controls it can limit charge, preserve reserve or start a generator by SOC. We distinguish conventional absorb/float logic from managed-lithium control through the BMS.
Weak points we test
The most serious mistake is exceeding input voltage in cold weather. Other risks include multiple MPPTs charging one bank, inadequate isolation, reverse current, polarity and cooling. Every string receives a Voc/Isc calculation with tolerance and protection review.
Legal, regulatory and data context
Commercial PV work includes module and charger documentation, DC protection, fire and inspection requirements and the relationship to the connected generator. A string or battery change may require updated design and connection evidence.
Frequently asked questions
When should VarioString replace VarioTrack?
When its higher string-voltage and current window better matches the actual array.
Can several chargers use one battery?
Yes, when limits, communications, cabling, protection and charging strategy are coordinated.
Primary sources and fact check
