Define the energy question first
A project may reduce imported energy, maximum demand, cost, emissions or outage exposure. These are different outcomes and require different indicators. The baseline must account for production volume, weather, working hours and major operational changes.
Useful indicators
- grid import per unit of production,
- PV self-consumption and export ratio,
- maximum 15-minute demand,
- BESS round-trip efficiency and auxiliary consumption,
- availability of critical backup capacity,
- verified savings against an adjusted baseline.
Make controls auditable
Setpoints, state-of-charge reserves and manual overrides should be recorded. When EMS logic changes, the organisation needs to know why, who approved it and how performance will be compared. This turns a vendor dashboard into a managed improvement process.
