WECO module imbalance diagnostics

Different SOC, voltage or behaviour between modules is not a diagnosis and not an automatic reason to buy a new battery. We separate measurement, communications, settings, cabling and real capacity divergence before deciding whether to rebalance, repair, derate or replace a WECO system.

What module imbalance can mean

Modules in one battery bank may show different SOC estimates, voltage limits or usable capacity over time. Temperature, internal resistance, prolonged operation in a narrow SOC window, charge settings, communications, connection resistance or genuine cell ageing can all contribute. A different screen value is not enough to identify the cause.

A controlled diagnostic sequence

We first preserve configuration, BMS logs, alarms, minimum and maximum voltage history and available temperature data. Resting and loaded voltages, module order and addressing, communications, power connections, protection and environmental conditions are checked. A safe test within the manufacturer’s permitted procedure then shows whether divergence returns.

The objective is not to make percentages look equal by changing one setting. SOC is an estimate and can recalibrate independently of real capacity. Delivered energy in a defined window, voltage under current, temperature, trips and repeatability matter. High-voltage work follows the required competence and process; improvised parallel equalisation is not acceptable.

Retain, repair, derate or replace

Retention is reasonable when the difference is explained, capacity and protection meet the requirement and support remains available. Repair or controlled rebalancing is considered only with an approved procedure and after addressing the cause. Temporary power or SOC limits may keep the site safe while a decision is made. Replacement is justified where capacity, safety, compatibility, spares or future duty no longer support the business case.

A replacement need not use the same brand, and it must not be a pre-selected outcome of a service enquiry. We compare retaining WECO, partial modernisation and an alternative platform against the same use case, interfaces and lifecycle cost.

Data, warranty and the battery passport

Service work needs an evidence trail: module identity, firmware, original and changed settings, measurements, result and responsibility. Unauthorised work may affect warranty or safety, so scope is compared with manufacturer and integrator terms. The EU Batteries Regulation introduces a battery passport from 18 February 2027 for defined industrial batteries above 2 kWh. What to send before a visit

Useful inputs are nameplate photos, module topology, inverter model, firmware or app version, alarm screenshots and the conditions in which the issue appears. SOC, power, voltage and temperature history makes the first step more precise. We then scope remote diagnosis, on-site measurement or safe shutdown.

The report records observations, probable cause, missing evidence, immediate limits and next options. We do not promise restored capacity or lifetime without measurement.

Frequently asked questions

Does different SOC prove a failed module?

No. SOC is an estimate; voltage, capacity, temperature, current, communication and repeatable trips need to be compared.

Will you rebalance the battery immediately?

Diagnosis comes first. Rebalancing is appropriate only when the manufacturer permits it and the cause of divergence is addressed.
