What the manufacturer confirms
Victron introduced the VM-3P5A on 20 August 2026 for industry-standard 5 A current transformers. The manufacturer states primary-current measurement from 10 A to 6,000 A per phase, power-factor measurement and phase-sequence reporting. The manual covers single, split and three-phase use, VE.Can or Ethernet communications and high-rate data broadcast.
A GX system can assign the meter to the grid, a solar inverter, generator, dedicated load, EV charger or heat pump. Correct measurement placement therefore separates site demand from generation, charging and controllable loads.
A practical Node-RED pattern
A commercial flow can evaluate point-of-connection demand, battery state, backup reserve and forecast every few seconds. Above a soft ceiling it increases ESS discharge; below the release threshold it ramps down. It can pre-charge before a known production peak or protect minimum SOC ahead of a planned outage.
A generator flow can require a persistent energy deficit, verify contacts, allow warm-up and unload before stopping. An alarm flow stores the cause, pre-event values and operator acknowledgement. Critical electrical protection must not depend solely on a user flow.
AI-generated flows still require engineering
Victron public communications also demonstrate AI assisting with Node-RED flows. That may accelerate a prototype, node labels or data transformations. It does not replace register knowledge, electrical limits or state-machine validation. A generated flow may use a nonexistent variable, wrong units or a loop without hysteresis.
We therefore require version control, simulated inputs, ramp-rate limits, timeouts, manual override, a safe communications-loss state and rollback to the last accepted configuration. A post-SAT flow edit is a controlled change, not an informal dashboard adjustment.
RLHS conclusion
The VM-3P5A addresses a prerequisite of reliable control: measurability. It does not create savings by itself. Value emerges from correctly sized CTs, verified communication, explicit KPIs, safe Node-RED logic and acceptance testing. Victron remains relevant for ESS, microgrids and legacy upgrades, rather than an automatic answer for large containerised BESS.
